This course aims to provide delegates with the knowledge to achieve standard echocardiographic views in dogs including right and left side views and M mode.


The common artefacts which may be confused with cardiac pathology will be covered and an overview of the changes seen in common acquired and congenital cardiac disease in the dog and cat will be illustrated. The theory of Doppler will be introduced and its application in acquired and congenital disease. Normal Doppler findings will be discussed. Changes associated with hypertension, anaemia, hyperthyroidism and other systemic disease that can cause echocardiographic changes will be covered. The course has a high practical content and there is plenty of opportunity to practise the taught techniques.

  • Become familiar with machine
  • settings for the  recording of thoracic images
  • Revise the normal anatomy and ultrasonographic appearance of the thorax excluding the heart
  • Appreciate the applications of T-Fast scanning
  • Recognise the ultrasonographic changes and common diseases of the thoracic wall, pleural cavity and mediastinum
  • Review practical scanning of the thoracic organs and echocardiographic measurements

Key Learning objectives:

  • Recognise the normal anatomy and ultrasonographic appearance of the heart
  • Perform an echocardiographicexamination and diagnosis of acquired and congenital heart disease
  • The theory and use of spectral Doppler and colour-flow Doppler echocardiography
  • Review the use of two-dimensional and M-mode echocardiography
  • Obtain the useful ultrasonographic measurements needed to make a diagnosis
